Risk assessment

Here I have made a risk assessment for when we travel up to Camden. This way I have ensured that we are safe and know what to do if something goes wrong. Here I have thought of all the possible things that could effect our filming.

Animatic

How we created our animatic

- Draw storyboard frames- firstly with pencil then bold black pen to enhance the photo
-Individual pictures were taken from a camera
-Uploaded onto our computer
-Placed into Photo shop and edited using brightness and contrast to further enhance the framing
-Import the photos into the editing programme- Final cut pro
- Place each image into the time line and cut the length of it
- Place our music "state of flux" into the audio time line
- Effects and transitions added- overlays, earthquake, fade in/out
-Export onto a video uploading programme
-Embed into our blogs

Lighting

When researching into music video's I decided to research into the conventions of lighting. Artificial lighting is mostly used in music videos to add atmosphere and to show the shift from chorus and instrumental beat.
Artificial light is used in any genre music video. It is used mainly in both pop videos and Indie videos. In pop videos it is used for club scenes and enforces brightness and happiness. In Indie music videos the artificial lighting is used to add to the urban scene and the sense of loneliness and fear. Strobe lights are used a lot in Indie music videos.

Here are print screens of Ellie Golding - Lights and The horrors- still life that Sophie has put together. Both videos use a lot of cross dissolves for the effect of a futuristic feel. Ellie Golding and The horror are classed as Indie role models, close ups of her are used to sell the video. The colours change constantly through out the video added a mysterious look to the video. The different use of colours makes the video look unique. The cross dissolves are also used with many close ups of the artists. This makes the video more smooth.

Here is a picture that has been designed to show the use of lighting we will use in our music video. We aim to use strobe lights in our chorus.

Our Target Audience

Here I have designed a poster of what our target audience is like. When thinking up of the song and the music video I had my cousin in mind! She is the perfect fit. She has a Indie personality and style. Our target audience are a lot of girls and boys like her!

I have also put a picture under the poster of a indie male.
Indies like to shop at shops such as Top shop, Top man,Urban outfitters and All saints.
they use Online sources a lot and enjoy interacting with friends over Face book and Twitter.

After taking a picture of my cousin I thought I'd look into what http://www.uktribes.com/ thought :

Indie:Musically, Vampire Weekend, The Killers, The Klaxons, Glasvegas, Lily Allen, Pete Doherty, Friendly Fires, Bloc Party

Indie kids are particularly fond of bands with teenage members, like Cajun Dance Party or Laura Mauling, where there’s a small gap between the band and their audience.

Fashion of Indie Pop Artists:Fashion-wise, the uniform of Converse and skinny jeans, fringes, band T-shirts and lots of jewellery remains unchanged. Clothes are second-hand not vintage.

Demographics:

We sat together and come up with a target audience. We decided that our target audience would be people from 16-25 year old. Male and females. People this age will be interested in them music and understand the term INDIE. They will be able to relate with he mood and genre of the music. The music videos will also appeal to people in this age range.

When thinking of Target audience I also felt I had to think about the brand of my music video as well.
The target audience for my music video depends on my brand.

What makes Indie a unique brand? AND what target audience does the brand perceive?

Indie music video offers a different transformation and experience then most music. The mood of songs are usually mostly negative, upsetting and depressing. Our target audience get the find it EASY to relate to Indie music and the artist. The artist is usually close in age to the target audience making them feel more comfortable and being able to relate to them easier.

Target audience Profile ....
This is a typical outfit of an male Indie.

Inspiration and how it makes an Indie music video

As a group we discussed what our inspiration was. What sort of different conventions in music videos that we saw we wanted in out music video. And how they were in Indie videos.
Inspiration : Overlays
Holding up posters
Stalking

A music video takes months to edit before itis shown on our TVs, this is just the same for us, it will take us a long time to edit the music video. We don't want to edit it the same way as everybody's, making our video seem the exact same to others and"typical". To get away from this opinion we are going to use overlays.
We looked at Overlays in Pixie Lott- Its all about tonight. She uses overlays to show the location of the video and herself, this adds something to the video that the audience do not usually see. This will keep them interested in the video.
The use of overlays adds a graceful pace of editing to the video. We hopeto use overlays in our music video although most of our song is fast pace, on the more slow pace I feel that overlays will have a huge effect.

After looking at overlays I also looked at the idea of holding up posters in the music video. As our video emphasis on the idea of stalking and paranoia we felt that holding up posters would be a great way of showing the actors and actresses feelings and getting points across to the viewers in a different way rather then just acting it out. We looked at bands such as The Fray and Sugar Babes, these bands hold up posters in their songs.
Sugar Babes- Ugly in this video they hold up posters saying "BEAUTIFUL"
We will be holding up posters saying things like "State of flux" and "wanted" to captivate the audience.

We looked at the sense of stalking for our video. We feel that the idea of stalking, paranoia and vulnerability will add to the lyrics that are sung. We will have an actress stalking an actor. We want the video to be about broken relationships and not being able to get over things.
We looked at the idea of stalking in Twilight and films that involved relationships that were over.

Location of where our video will be filmed

CAMDEN TOWN

LocationLocationLocationLocationLocationLocationLocationLocationLocation

Here we have made a mood board and planned the places we are going to visit when we go to Camden Town. We have shown that we are going to use the train station for the beginning and ending of our video. We are also planning on our music video being in the evening so we have used pictures of Camden at night. We will be using Ally Ways and different roads that have Graffiti on the walls.
We felt that it was best to plan what we were going to do while in Camden so that once we got there we didn't waste time.
Next to the pictures are why we want to go to these destinations!

We are going to Camden in the christmas holiday to take our own pictures of the location. I will upload soon!!!

Pitch

Before we get started I have decided to pitch our idea for the music video to you!!

The song we are creating a music video for is Flux- Bloc Party. My group is myself, Vicky Gordon, Sophie Jansen and Voke Oyeye. All three of these are my close friends, meaning this is an advantage when making the music video as we know each others truth and weakness's.

The song its self is a fast paced song about romance. The main lyrics in the song are "State of Flux". The song lyrics tell us a story about how a relationship is falling apart and they need to try and sort it out. However random lyrics are also added in, such as "I saw my father in second grade" so we have decided to make the video quite bizarre and "crazy".

We are going to have a main actor and a actress who is the stalker. She is going to follow him every where he goes making him feel paranoid and confused. As sometimes when he turns round she won't be there.

. The girl will be following the boy around Camden town, putting up pictures of him sayinf "Wanted!" and following him around the train station. The same scene will be shown for every chorus. This will be when he is shown in a room that is filled with pictures of both of them and love quotes wrote all over the walls.

This video is all about the sense of paranoia and vulnerability. Hopefully with all of our knowledge on Indie music videos our music video will be a hit!

WHY CAMDEN?
we have chosen to shoot in Camden because, the setting is exactly what we want! We want a busy place where there will be lots of rushing and bumping into each other. We have decided to go there when the trains will be most busy. We also liked the look of Camden at night. It has a spooky, stillness and empty atmosphere about it.

EMOTIONS THAT WILL BE PORTRAYED FROM THE MUSIC VIDEO
-paranoia
-vulnerability
-loneliness
-emptiness

I'll keep you updated on how its going!

Bloc party

Bloc party are the band that sing our song "Flux". This is how our actor is going to look. As in similar clothing, personality and hair style through out the music video.
Bloc Party are a British Indie band. Their brand of music is said to have been drawn from such bands as Mogwi, The Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth and in their more recent work, Radiohead.
The band was formed at the 1999 at Reading Festivalby Okereke and Lissack.

The band was formed in 1999 but just recently in 2011 Kele Okereke thought he had been kicked out of Bloc Party. Almost six months after the band announced they would reunite for a new album, their singer issued the bizarre claim that Bloc Party are recording without him.

About Flux
Kele Okereke told the New Musical Express October 20, 2007: "It's about trying to recognize that a moment has passed between people. It canapply to personal and professional relationships. It's the hardest thing recognizing that something that was there isn't any more."
This is exactly what we are trying to portray in our music video. As Kele Okereke the leader of the band said it is about recognizing something that was there isn't any more. In out music video we are including a stalker. This is one way we show this quote, the stalker finds it hard to realise that her relationship is over and becomes obsessed, making our actor feel paranoid and vulnerable. We also added a different way of portraying this quote, we wanted to add a sense of illusion by making the actor feel that he is seeing things. One minute he sees the stalker and the next she is gone. This is another different way of showing "something that was there isn't anymore"

Here is the track cover of "Flux", although it is a cover that does not consist of the band on the front it still shows parts of the song and sums up the song really well. It has the name of the band and the name of the song up in the top left corner, the heading is in white writing on a black background. This allows the text to stand out no matter what font or size it is because of the colour contrast. Underneath this there is a picture of a building with all the lights on and lights outside of the building on. This has been put onto the black background too. I feel this has been done so that it shows what the song is about in a different way rather than having a heartbroken, vulnerable person on the front. It shows the stages of a hard time. How there can be dark times and light times standing for bad times and good times. It shows the contrast of how happy you can be when things are going right and how down you can be when they are not. It also shows in a different interesting way the difference between being scared confused and alone and being safe, comfortable and happy. They do this by the huge difference between the black background and the bright building.

Story board

Here we are working as a team and discussing our story board ideas, as you can see we have already made good progress with the story board.
Myself and Sophie Jansen also recorded ourselves having a conversation discussing our story board and our ideas for the story board. Vicky and Voke were drawing the pictures for the story board whilst me and Sophie were thinking of new ideas to discuss with the both of them. This is how our planning came about.

Here we designed an animatic drawing of our video before we actually went out and filmed the video. We did this to get a sense of what our video was going to look like. This way if there were parts we didn't like we could change them now rather than having to re-film!
Myself and Sophie thought up of the story line and the main artists of the group Vicky and Voke added in their input and designed the pictures once we had agreed. We worked as a team doing this and all had individual tasks. After this will put the pictures into Final Cut and made an animatic video out of it. Myself and Vicky did the editing as we felt this was our strength. Our other group members gave input on things we were not sure on.
Now that we have completed the anitmated video we just need to film !!

Our Actress

Actress: Emily Fry
Age:17
Why?: I am the actress in the music video. In the music video I am our actors stalker, I have been chosen to be the actress because the rest of the group feel that I have a distincitve look and distincitive hair that added together with clothing can stand out, so that it is clear to the audience and viewers that I am always in the shot and always following Jake our actor. This was an important thing for us to think about. I also feel that I will be able to act well in the video.

Our Actor

Actor: Jake
Age: 17
Why?:Here are pictures of the Actor that we are actually going to use in our music video, we have decided to use Jake because we feel he meets the indie look we are looking for. He has the dress sense and tattoos that I said the Indie culture consists of in a previous post. He also has mannerisms and characteristics of a Indie teenager, this means although of course he will have to act, he may find it easier than some one else who isn't so Indie.
The first picture is his tattoo, this is a bold statement of Indie, not just a tattoo but more whats in the tattoo a skull and flowers add to the Indie vibe and are now a must have in the Indie world! The third picture shows his style, this is the type of style we are going for in our music video just with a jacket on, seeing as most of our video will be filmed in the evening.
The second picture is to show the behaviour of jake, our video is about the Indie scene and needs to be pretty outragous, with acting from Jake I feel we will be able to do this!

Music channels our song would fit into to

When looking for the music channels that our song would fit into perfectly, we decided to use SKY seeing as SKY is one of the biggest TV providers that has the most music channels available.
The music channels ranging from Mtv Hits, MTV Music, Kerrang!, Flava, Q, Kiss, MTV Base, 4 music, The box and many more were show on sky.
The channels that we personally felt our Indie genre music video would fit into were,

  • MTV Hits

  • Kiss

  • Flava

  • Q

  • 4 music
These are our six potential channels.
We chose these because we felt they suited our music video and our specific audience would go onto these channels and watch music from here.
. 4 music is about the festivals and Indie genre, where our music would be based seeing as we have a indie genre.
. MTV Hits shows all the biggest hits of the month, ranging from Indie to pop, as we feel our music video will be extremely successful, it could be on this channel.
.Kiss has recently started to show not only R&B songs but also a slight range of Indie songs, it has evolved into a wider range. Showing that Indie music is on its way up! Our Indie genre song could be the music video to make the wider range more popular.

Mood board

My group and I created a mood board and put all our ideas for the music video together. This shows how much research we have done into our music video and how much creativity we have as a whole group. We focused on our genre and our audience.

Here are some pictures of not only our mood board that shows the lyrics, words and pictures surrounding it but pictures of us making it as well. It was essential for our lyrics to be part of the mood board so that viewers could see where we were getting our ideas from.

The pictures in the mood board are showing drugs, indie characters and indie locations. We did this to see our ideas on paper to see if they worked.

Editing of music videos

The Man who cant be moved - The Script

In the video the man who cant be moved the pace of the editing is calm and slow while following Danny the lead singer around while he is waiting for the girl he loves. The music video is a narrative base video. Long shots of him are used to show the scene around him and what he is doing, there are also close up shots shown when he is walking, just his head is dominant in the video, the more close ups of the lead singer the better because close ups are in demand in the music industry.
Half way through the music video, the band are seen performing, close ups of each band member are shown, this puts emphasis on the artist or bands face for promotional reason.
A pan shot is used to follow the movement of the lead singer on his journey, making the video seem more realistic and make the viewers feel like there walking with the band member too.
The pace of the editing throughout this song is always in sync with the beat of the track.

Barney Rubble- The Twang

In the video Barney Rubbles by The Twang the camera movement in editing uses all different tracking shots such as pans and dolly track shots. The transitions and cuts through out the video are fast paced and the jumps between each cut are quick. The cuts change to random things through out the song and only half way through does the cuts start making sense. The cuts jump from a scene of the location to the artist to the instruments and vice-versa.

Spaceship- Dappy and Tinchy Stryder

In this music video the cuts are quick and the video over all has a fast pace to it. A tracking shot is used, it is a performance and narrative based video. Close ups are shown of Dappy and Tinchy Styder often, Long shots, showing scenery and setting are also shown.

Editing in music videos

Editing in music videos creates meaning, it shapes the video and tells us a meaning whether its narrative or performance based.
''The important thing to remember is that the purpose of editing is to reduce the source material down to a more manageable size and to try and create a story of the events you captured.'' quote by The Guardian.
There are many aspects of editing that are used in a music video, especially in a INDIE music video like the video we are making.
Aspects such as transitions, lengths of shots, long shots and close ups are used. Other type of aspects are also shown such as who has the star persona, use of close ups to show instruments and who is privileged in the shots.

Transitions
The way shots are joined together in a music video is called the transition. Transitions are very important. The most common transition is the cut, the cut transition means when one shot cuts instantly to the next, this is used in many Indie music videos, when telling a story within the video, it helps viewers understand the song and shows them whats going on in the music video. Cut transitions are used in The Scripts song "Nothing" showing how the lead singer is making his way home to apologise to his girlfriend. Other transitions such as cross fade, wipes and digital effects can sometimes be used.

( Here is the Transition of the member in Rizzle kicks looking down and the next cut shown is the girl looking up at him)

Lengths of shots
The length of shots is an important consideration that can greatly affect a music video. The purpose of editing any given song is to create a representation of the way the song might be perceived by the band. Shots with a longer duration can make a part of the song seem more relaxed and slower paced. Shots with a shorter duration can make a scene seem urgent and faster paced. Long shots and Close ups

Long shots are used when showing the whole of a band in a music video, this shows the whole band together, adding realism for the audience that this is the band singing. This is used often in a Indie music video because an indie video usually consists of a band and long shots can easily include the whole band. Close ups are also used often in indie video because a few close ups of each band member help sell the music video. The audience want to see as much of the band as they can in a music video because the band its self is the reason why they are fans, the more close ups of the band, the more the fans are going to want to watch the music video. There is a great demand fro close ups of the performers in the music industry.

Other aspects such as Use of close ups on instruments are used in an indie music video often. The use of close ups on an instrument when the instrument can easily be heard adds to the sound its making, because the fans can watch the band member making the sound that's making a huge positive difference to the music for example a note on the guitar could make the whole song.
Most of the time the main band member, such as the lead vocalist is most privileged in the music video.

Your footage might be great, but it'll only become a great video through editing. To do a good job you'll need patience, time and more patience. You'll need to decide the 'feel' and pace of the video. Will it be made up of long sweeping shots, or quick sharp edits? Do you want to follow the mood of the song and edit to the music or do you want the video to contrast with the track?
The following is a list of MTV video music awards winners for Best Editing in a Video.
